Southland Girls High School Gymnasium, Invercargill

(Halls Brothers Group Education Project)

A netball court that meets international regulations was the primary reason for this extensive renovation. We were required to upgrade and extend the existing building to utilize existing changing rooms for three classrooms in addition to providing new staff facilities and storage areas.

The building has an east orientation, opening out onto, and connecting with, existing courts and the school. Constructed of cast insitu concrete panels and a steel truss roof, the result is an awe-inspiring structure encompassing a modern facility the school can be proud of. Low and high level glazing complement both the new building and the existing school.

Constant planning and monitoring to protect access pathways was essential both for safe construction and to provide high degrees of safety required for the schools day-to-day activities. Site safety issues were paramount and a key factor in the construction of the gym.

SILVER AWARD                        CATEGORY WINNER

Windsor Development, Invercargill

(QBE Insurance Retail & Business Project)

The client brief was to maximize limited land space to contain an impressive but functional retail and office complex for a potentially diverse range of tenants. The project took only 10 months, in which time a multi-level building was completed, including tenant fit-out.

The main entry has been placed to maximize street frontage exposure, enabling a free flow for pedestrians to enter the stunning foyer with glass lift and stainless steel balustrade. From here movement throughout the building to any of the tenanted floors is achieved with ease.

During construction, once panels were cast and hoisted into position, unispan ribs were installed to the first floor and a concrete floor was cast on top of these. Structural steel could then be assembled and roofing installed. With such a tight programme, great attention had to be paid to procuring all material and scheduling in sub-trades ahead of the time required.

Exterior coating applied to the concrete panels and monotex completes this stunning building with its uniquely stylish and modern appearance.
